In an effort to address concerns and gather feedback from the community, the City of Alexandria will host an open house this month to discuss the National Airport Noise Mitigation Project. The project aims to reduce noise levels for residents living near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
Open House Details
- Date: June 30, 2024
- Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
- Location: Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe Street, Alexandria, VA 22314
Background of the National Airport Noise Mitigation Project
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has identified Alexandria as a community that is eligible for noise mitigation funding due to the proximity of DCA. The project is a collaborative effort between the FAA, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), and the City of Alexandria.
Scope of the Project
The project will focus on addressing noise impacts in select areas of Alexandria. The following neighborhoods are included in the study:
- Arlandria
- Potomac Yard
- Del Ray
- Eisenhower East
Noise Mitigation Measures
The open house will present various noise mitigation measures that are being considered for implementation in Alexandria. These measures include:
- Airport Operations Changes: Modifications to flight patterns, preferential runway use, and aircraft technology upgrades to reduce noise.
- Land Use Controls: Zoning regulations and building code requirements to limit noise exposure in sensitive areas.
- Noise Insulation Programs: Financial assistance for residents to install soundproofing measures in their homes.
- Education and Outreach: Programs to educate residents about airport noise impacts and available mitigation measures.
Community Engagement
The City of Alexandria recognizes the importance of community input in this project. The open house provides a platform for residents to:
- Learn about the project plan
- Discuss mitigation options
- Share their concerns and experiences
- Provide feedback on potential solutions
Feedback gathered from the open house will be incorporated into the project planning process. The FAA will make final decisions on noise mitigation measures based on the input received from the community and other stakeholders.
Benefits of the Project
The National Airport Noise Mitigation Project aims to improve the quality of life for residents living near DCA. Noise mitigation can provide the following benefits:
- Reduced noise exposure, leading to improved sleep and reduced stress levels
- Increased property values
- Enhanced livability and community well-being
How to Participate
